Mixed media is a highlight of “Contextural Matters,” a thoughtful and inspired exhibit of work by Ingrid Restemayer on exhibit at the Nina Bliese Gallery in September and October 2009. Imagine a skyscape of embroidery stitched threads elegantly capturing found objects into an often playful, many times provocative, visual story. Discarded glass vials of seed beads take on a new life in a skyscape becoming smokestacks as the threads become whispy exhaust fumes. Plastic drink monkeys and thumbtacks are a few of the items that are incorporated into skillfully hand stitched paper canvas.

An upbringing in midwest, middle-class American consumer culture has given Restemayer an uncommon appreciation for the beauty in simple, common objects. Being a recycler and habitual pack-rat for most of her life makes it unnecessary for Restemayer to look any further than the kitchen junk drawer or in the back of an office cabinet to find an inspiring object. When combined with Restemayer’s unique hand-stitching, bits of pop culture, the flotsam of everyday life transform in meaning or symbolism given their physical or implied context.

Do not miss a chance to reflect on how found objects are not just symbols of our culture but can stimulate thought, discussion and even laughter.
